Modern Racism as a Predictor of the Linguistic Intergroup Bias.
Schnake, Sherry B.; Ruscher, Janet B.
Journal of Language and Social Psychology, v17 n4 p484-91 Dec 1998
Evaluated use of linguistic-intergroup bias (LIB) approach (A. Maass, D. Salvi, L. Arcuri, and G. Semin, 1989) to measure prejudice in 65 European-American college students. Term "modern racism" used to describe certain European Americans' conflict between egalitarian beliefs and residual negative affect toward African Americans. As predicted, European Americans higher in prejudice described African Americans' stereotypical behaviors in more abstract fashion than did low-prejudice students. (SLD)
