Reaching the Top: Racial Differences in Mobility Paths to Upper-Tier Occupations.
Wilson, George; Sakura-Lemessy, Ian; West, Jonathan P.
Work and Occupations: An International Sociological Journal, v26 n2 p165-86 May 1999
Analysis of data from 804 African Americans and 2,101 Whites supported the particularistic mobility thesis. African Americans' promotion to managerial-administrative or professional-technical occupations was restricted by particularistic employment practices to those who acquire significant human capital credentials and experience. These practices were more prevalent in the private sector. (SK)
