An Electrophysiological Study of Infants' Sensitivity to the Sound Patterns of English Speech.
Shafer, Valerie L.; Shucard, David W.; Shucard, Janet L.; Gerken, LouAnn
Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, v41 n4 p874-86 Aug 1998
This study explored the sensitivity of 20 10- to 11-month-old infants to the phonological characteristics of their native language. Tone-probe event-related potentials were obtained for subjects listening to a story, either with normal English function morphemes or modified with atypical function morphemes. Results suggest that the 11-month-olds, but not the 10-month-olds, discriminated the two story versions. (Author/DB)
