The Clash of Social Categories: What Can We Do to Encourage Egalitarianism in Networked Writing Classrooms?
Caster, Joanna
Computers and Composition, v14 n2 p257-68 Aug 1997
Notes that, although networked writing classrooms are more egalitarian than non-networked classrooms, networks cannot prevent discrimination. Social identity theory, from social psychology, suggests that instructors must be careful when focusing courses on divisive social issues; the presentation of these issues can break down into binary oppositions and create oppressive learning situations for students who already suffer discrimination.
