Toward a Reconciliation of "Assimilation" and "Pluralism": The Interplay of Acculturation and Ethnic Retention.
Gans, Herbert J.
International Migration Review, v31 n4 p875-92 Win 1997
Discusses polarization among immigration researchers and attempts to reconcile the issues of acculturation and assimilation with ethnic retention. Two arguments to help prevent polarization are examined: that acculturation and accommodation occur without assimilation; and that researchers have studied different generations of immigrants and have approached their research with "outsider" and "insider" values.
