The Market Route to Mass Higher Education: British Experience 1979-1996.
Williams, Gareth
Higher Education Policy, v10 n3-4 p275-89 Sep-Dec 1997
The 1979-96 period of radical change in British higher education began with severe cuts in spending. Universities sought funds elsewhere, undertaking research and consulting contracts with industry, and soliciting private funding. Most institutions were redesignated as universities, changing the conception of the university. While enrollments increased, expenditures per student decreased dramatically, and financial power shifted from education providers to consumers. (Author/MSE)
