Beyond the Individual-Social Antinomy in Discussions of Piaget and Vygotsky.
Cole, Michael; Wertsch, James V.
Human Development, v39 n5 p250-56 Sep-Oct 1996
Examines the role attributed to cultural mediation in Piaget's and Vygotsky's theories. Mediation of human action by cultural artifacts was central to Vygotsky's account of human development, but less important for Piaget. Vygotsky's claims regarding social origins of individual mental processes need to be understood in light of claims regarding how artifacts mediate social and individual functioning. (Author/KB)
