Assessing the Effectiveness of Supplemental Instruction: A Critique and a Case Study.
McCarthy, Andrew; And Others
Studies in Higher Education, v22 n2 p221-31 Jun 1997
Argues that methods of assessing effectiveness of university supplemental instruction (SI) programs (in which successful students provide additional instruction to students in high-risk courses) have been inadequate. Suggests ways of isolating SI effects on student achievement, and recommends broadening research methods to include qualitative forms of assessment. Presents a case study at a South African university. (Author/MSE)
