Pragmatic Language Disorder and Perspective Taking in Autistic Speakers.
Volden, Joanne; And Others
Applied Psycholinguistics, v18 n2 p181-98 Jun 1997
A study compared results of referential communication and perspective-taking tasks for 10 high-functioning autistic adolescents and young adults and matched normally developing controls. Autistic subjects showed significant communicative dysfunction and qualitatively different communicative interactions. Possible explanations: deficits in "theory of mind" too subtle to be detected in perspective-taking tasks, and late development of perspective-taking skills. (MSE)
