"E pluribus unum" too often equates with assimilation or discrimination, with no tolerance of variation. Schools must strive to eliminate such a rigidly defined, ethnocentric canon and normalize inclusivity. Individuals inclined to argue against existing historical representations (of "woman,""poor," or "black") can become productive, positive, and energizing sources for change. Becoming surrogate parents and teachers will help. (34 references) (MLH)
