Child-Rearing Practices of Mothers of School-Based Competent Kindergartners Who Are Characterized as At-Risk. Developmentally Appropriate Practice.
Lowden, Frances Y.
Journal of Early Education and Family Review, v4 n5 p8-11 May-Jun 1997
Examined whether mothers who were at or below the poverty level, members of a minority group, single parents, or who possessed low educational levels can be considered "strong" effective parents. Found that at-risk parents can be and often are effective parents; effective parenting practices and a positive home environment may help ameliorate stressors that impede academic and social performance.
