Phonology Without Tiers: Why the Phonetic Representation Is Not Derived from the Phonological Representation.
Fraser, Helen
Language Sciences, v19 n2 p101-37 Apr 1997
Argues against the idea that phonetic representation and phonological representation are related to each other by computational transformation, based on analysis of the philosophical presuppositions of the concept "representation" and made from the perspective of phenomenology, not cognitive science. An alternative approach to phonology is outlined, implications for practice are explored, and contrasts between phenomenological and generative phonology are drawn. (Author/MSE)
