Foniks (Phonics) for Deff (Deaf) Tshildrun? (Children?) Yoo Beddzah! (Why Not?).
LaSasso, Carol
Perspectives in Education and Deafness, v14 n5 p6-9 May-Jun 1996
Describes how phonics can help deaf students in both speech production and reading despite their inability to obtain auditory feedback. Successful deaf graduate students are reported to use tactile-kinesthetic feedback in interpreting phonetic information. Teachers of younger students are urged to emphasize speech instruction (even if speech is unintelligible) and incorporate phonics into whole language approaches. (DB)
