American School Board Journal, v183 n10 p34-37 Oct 1996
Malcolm X Academy, a public K-8 elementary school in Detroit, Michigan, was created to save the city's young black males from the perils of academic failure, drugs, and violence. Even though girls now comprise 15% of the student body, the school's primary mission remains helping young black males. Students' reading and math test scores are far above district and state averages. (MLF)
