Intergenerational Conversations: Young Adults' Retrospective Accounts.
Williams, Angie; Giles, Howard
Human Communication Research, v23 n2 p220-50 Dec 1996
Combines theoretical insights of communication accommodation theory and the communicative predicament model (CPM) of aging with methodological procedures of interethnic communication. Finds that older communicators in dissatisfying conversations were characterized as being underaccommodative and negatively expressive. Interprets data theoretically in relation to accommodation theory and the CPM. Suggests that both satisfying and dissatisfying intergenerational conversations sustain ageist ideologies. (RS)
