Structuring Classroom Lessons: Attempts to Incorporate Student Questions and Initiatives during Math Lessons.
Renne, Christine G.
Teacher Education Quarterly, v23 n2 p5-18 Spr 1996
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards recommend interactive classroom discourse, including student questions and initiatives, rather than teacher-centered recitation structures, such as the traditional initiation-reply-evaluation sequence (IRE). This study explores how student questions and initiatives arise during a mathematics lesson, results of such questioning, and implications for preservice education and implementation of reform efforts.
