A Content Analysis of Three Mass Communication Research Traditions: Social Science, Interpretive Studies, and Critical Analysis.
Fink, Edward J.; Gantz, Walter
Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, v73 n1 p114-34 Spr 1996
Examines 10 variables in content analyses of 245 journal articles from the social scientific, interpretive, and critical traditions. Finds that researchers conform highly to expectations associated with ontology, epistemology, data collection, and data analysis, but less so with theory, hypotheses, sampling, verification, and generalization. Suggests that scholars are strongly guided by the expectations associated with these traditions. (SR)
