Discusses the reactions of 20 college students (half of whom are white) in a freshman composition when the instructor brought up the issue of racism. Notes that many students are frightened, suspicious, and uneducated in the cultural impetus behind minority behavior, and many minority students live in a society that is exclusionary, disparaging, and deeply damaging to their self-esteem.
