American Textbooks and Tamil Students: Discerning Ideological Tensions in the ESL Classroom.
Canagarajah, A. Suresh
Language, Culture and Curriculum, v6 n2 p143-56 1993
Ways that teacher-conducted classroom research can interrogate ideological tensions in the English-as-a-Second-Language classroom are discussed. Using a poststructuralist perspective on language, the paper interprets verbal and visual signs in the American textbook and the graffiti scribbled by students in the margins. Much deals with ethnic culture, politics, romance/sex, and film culture. (22 references) (Author/LB)
