Choices in a No-Choice System: Motives and Biases in Sorority Segregation.
Schmitz, Stephen; Forbes, Sean Alan
Journal of College Student Development, v35 n2 p103-08 Mar 1994
Interviewed 16 undergraduate women in racially segregated sorority system. Findings revealed that Greeks formally supported integration but that structure and language of recruitment processes discouraged African American women from joining white sororities. Status concerns, dual systems, covert racism, ignorance of options, fear, and sorority apathy helped perpetuate separatism. (Author/NB)
