Helping "AHA" to Happen: The Contributions of Irving Sigel.
Ellsworth, Peter C.; Sindt, Vincent G.
Educational Leadership, v51 n5 p40-44 Feb 1994
Representational competence develops as individuals learn that objects, events, and places can be represented in some form. Irving Siegel's studies of classification competencies showed that underprivileged children have difficulty sorting pictures into meaningful groupings. However, both privileged and underprivileged children construct reasonable groupings using three-dimensional objects. All children need opportunities for engagement, anticipation, reconstruction, and transcendence. (MLH)
