Addresses how values have been treated in American schools, arguing that educators' reluctance to treat values directly (as "object matter") arises from Enlightenment notions of perfectability. Distinguishes among definitions of "value,""aversion," and "attitude." Instead of actively working to build conscience, schools concentrate on teaching coping skills in a neutral fashion.
