Male Counselors' Discomfort with Gay and HIV-Infected Clients.
Hayes, Jeffrey A.; Gelso, Charles J.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, v40 n1 p86-93 Jan 1993
Examined male counselors' reactions to gay and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected clients. Findings from 34 counselors revealed that counselors experienced greater discomfort with HIV-infected that HIV-negative clients, and counselors' homophobia predicted their discomfort with gay male clients. Client sexual orientation did not affect counselor discomfort; death anxiety was unrelated to discomfort with HIV-infected clients. (Author/NB)
