Perceived Problem-Solving Ability as a Predictor of Depression, Hopelessness, and Suicide Ideation in a College Population.
Priester, Michael J.; Clum, George A.
Journal of Counseling Psychology, v40 n1 p79-85 Jan 1993
Longitudinal design with mild, naturalistic stressor (poor grade on midterm examination) tested whether perceived problem-solving ability predicted adjustment among 303 college students. Participants completed assessment before and after stressor. Individuals who appraised their problem-solving ability as lower before stressor were more vulnerable to stress and experienced higher depression and hopelessness after stressor. (Author/NB)
