This article recommends that teachers' images of teaching, their metaphorical language, and their responses to teaching problems be examined to provide a tool for personal teaching reform. Excerpts from an interview with a preservice teacher illustrate his personal perceptions of teaching as "engagement" and of understanding and ability as a "series of levels." (JDD)
