UNESCO's 1966 Intergovernmental Conference prepared a Status of Teachers recommendation based on the conviction that good education is required for individual happiness, national prosperity, and international understanding; good education requires competent, devoted teachers; and a sufficient supply of such teachers can be enlisted by public respect for their professional and economic status.
