The Economic Progress of Black Women, 1940-1980: Occupational Distribution and Relative Wages.
Cunningham, James S.; Zalokar, Nadja
Industrial and Labor Relations Review, v45 n3 p540-55 Apr 1992
Census data from 1940-80 illustrate that African-American women's increased relative wages resulted from entry into occupations in which they were previously unrepresented. Their increased wages and occupational status are largely a result of decreases in racial discrimination by occupation and industry, although in the South discrimination had greater effects and decreased later than in the rest of the country.
