Strategy Instruction for Academically At-Risk Students: An Exploratory Study of Teaching "Higher-Order" Reading and Writing in the Social Studies.
Thornburg, Devin G.
Journal of Reading, Writing, and Learning Disabilities International, v7 n4 p377-406 Oct-Dec 1991
A "cognitive apprenticeship" approach was evaluated with 58 high-risk grade 7 social studies students. The three teachers were trained to provide explicit instruction of higher order cognitive strategies through modeling, monitoring, and collaborative role-playing activities. Students' writing showed significant improvements and was judged similar to that of a general student group. (DB)
