School Phobia: A Critical Analysis of the Separation Anxiety Theory and an Alternative Conceptualization.
Pilkington, Cynthia L.; Piersel, Wayne C.
Psychology in the Schools, v28 n4 p290-303 Oct 1991
Reviews literature on school phobia which reveals predominant view concerning its etiology is separation anxiety theory. Critically analyzes theory on three grounds: methodological problems, lack of generalizability concerning pathological mother-child relationships, and lack of emphasis on external etiological variables. Recommends reexamining school phobia as normal avoidance reaction to unpleasant, unsatisfying, or hostile school environment. (Author/NB)
