Klesges, Robert C.; And Others
Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, v59 n5 p749-52 Oct 1991
Twenty smoking women participated in nicotine gum and smoking administration, after which resting energy expenditures (REEs) were measured. Results indicated acute increase in REE for both nicotine gum and cigarettes. Metabolic rates for nicotine gum slowly returned to baseline; rates for cigarettes quickly fell significantly below baseline. Metabolic effect of nicotine gum was greater than effect of smoking.
