Teaching Thermodynamics to Middle School Students: What Are Appropriate Cognitive Demands?
Linn, Marcia C.; Songer, Nancy Butler
Journal of Research in Science Teaching, v28 n10 p885-918 Dec 1991
When comparing performances across four versions of Computer as Lab Partner curriculum, increases in understanding were found when students predicted outcomes and reconciled results, and students used a heat-flow model of thermodynamics to integrate their experimental results. Argued is that curriculum must explicitly motivate students to construct understanding and students benefit from "pragmatic models" of scientific concepts. (50 references) (Author/KR)
