Ancient Egyptian Medical Texts: A Rhetorical Analysis of Two of the Oldest Papyri.
Lipson, Carol S.
Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, v20 n4 p391-409 1990
Analyzes two ancient Egyptian technical texts, the Edwin Smith Surgery Manual and the Ebers Manual, to identify complex rhetorical dynamics that present or encourage substantive reformulation of medical practice and thinking within a strongly conservative, authoritarian culture. Shows how the ancient Egyptian rhetorical forms allow for challenges to tradition while adhering to values placed on tradition. (KEH)
