This article compares Alexander Graham Bell's achievements in the areas of instruction and technology for the hearing impaired with contemporary techniques and devices, many of which stem from his work. Assessment techniques, cochlear implants, tactile devices and visual aids are discussed as well as other alternatives and supplements to residual hearing. (PB)
