Coming-of-Age among Contemporary American Indians as Portrayed in Adolescent Fiction.
Markstrom-Adams, Carol
Adolescence, v25 n97 p225-37 Spr 1990
Reviewed nine contemporary novels (1971-86) to examine dominant themes evident in contemporary novels involving American Indian adolescents. In contrast to earlier novels, these contemporary novels reflected greater realism toward and less stereotyping of American Indians. Most salient themes dealt with prejudice and discrimination, hopelessness and helplessness of minority group, intermarriage, alienation, friendships, search for self, tradition, and spirituality.
