Black, Hispanic and White mothers (n=60) of young children with mental retardation were interviewed. Hispanic mothers showed greater attitudes of self-sacrifice toward the child and greater spouse denial of the disability than others. Parents who received the child's diagnosis within a month of birth were more likely to report developmental stages in their reactions. (Author/PB)
