Behavioral Antecedents of Relationship Stability and Adjustment: A Five-Year Longitudinal Study.
Filsinger, Erik E.; Thoma, Stephen J.
Journal of Marriage and the Family, v50 n3 p785-95 Aug 1988
Followed 21 premarital couples over five-year period, using microanalyses of Time 1 interaction to predict relationship stability and adjustment. Found dyadic instability to be predicted by negativity reciprocity, positive reciprocity, and level of female's interruptions. Dyadic adjustment was predicted by female's interruptions. Findings support notion that behavioral patterns of interaction predate later relationship distress. (Author/NB)
