Family Ties and Leaving Home for College: Recent Findings and Implications.
Kenny, Maureen E.
Journal of College Student Personnel, v28 n5 p438-42 Sep 1987
Recent research with first year college students indicated that emotional closeness to parents was associated with social and intellectual competence during the leaving home period. Secure parental attachment fostered self-confidence, willingness to explore the environment, and the development of social skills. Students describing themselves as closer to parents also described themselves as more independent, dominant, and responsible. (Author/KS)
