A Comparative Study of Hispanic High School Dropouts and Graduates: Why Do Some Leave School Early and Some Finish?
Valverde, Sylvia A.
Education and Urban Society, v19 n3 p320-29 May 1987
Interviews were conducted with 104 Mexican American high school graduates and dropouts to determine why some students leave school. The interviewees reported similar family backgrounds (parental educational and occupational levels), but graduates were more likely to report having more friends, more siblings who had graduated, better overall grades, and (surprisingly) lower English language proficiency.
