The Functions of Imitation in Child Language.
Reger, Zita
Applied Psycholinguistics, v7 n4 p323-52 Dec 1986

Results revealed an unbroken developmental trend leading to lexically coherent conversational replies and that imitation aided the children in learning the lexicon, making phonological approximations of adult word forms, and learning grammar.
