Technological Discontinuities and Organizational Environments.
Tushman, Michael L.; Anderson, Philip
Administrative Science Quarterly, v31 n3 p439-65 Sep 1986
Technological effects on environmental conditions are analyzed using longitudinal data from the minicomputer, cement, and airline industries. Technology evolves through periods of incremental change punctuated by breakthroughs that enhance or destroy the competence of firms. Competence-destroying discontinuities increase environmental turbulence; competence-enhancing discontinuities decrease environmental turbulence. (CJH)
