Evaluating Written Expression: Issues of Reliability, Validity, and Instructional Utility.
Isaacson, Stephen
Diagnostique, v9 n2 p96-116 Win 1984

Direct atomistic measures have greater instructional utility in diagnostic assessment, grouping, monitoring and decision making, reporting student progress, and giving feedback to students than do indirect or holistic measures.
