Pessimism is voiced that some solutions to the shortage of qualified mathematics teachers will be effective nationally. The author fears that differential pay will only redistribute the supply of available teachers, while retrained teachers will be attracted by nonteaching salaries and, moreover, may not communicate an appreciation of mathematics.
