Effects of Speech and Speech and Sign Instruction on Oral Language Learning and Generalization of Action + Object Combinations by Down's Syndrome Children.
Romski, Mary Ann; Ruder, Kenneth F.
Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, v49 n3 p293-302 Aug 1984
Results indicated that the two treatment conditions (speech and speech-sign) did not differ significantly for either learning or generalization with 10 Down's Syndrome three-seven year olds. The data did, however, indicate that individual patterns of acquisition were evident among the children. Caution is advised concerning automatic adoption or rejection of manual sign as part of oral language invention. (Author/CL)
