Inferential Reading Abilities of Mildly Mentally Retarded and Nonretarded Students.

Mildly retarded junior-high students (N=16) and nonretarded third-graders (N=16) matched for reading comprehension level read and recalled descriptive expository and narrative passages. On expository passages retarded Ss generated the same quantity of inferences as nonretarded students, but the inferences were qualitatively inferior. On narrative passages differences between groups were not significant. (Author/CL)
