The Diagnosis of Language Disorders in Bilingual Children: Surface-Oriented and Pragmatic Criteria.
Damico, Jack S.; And Others
Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, v48 n4 p385-94 Nov 1983
A comparison of pragmatic criteria (such as nonfluencies, revisions, delays, and inappropriate shifts) and traditionally employed surface-oriented criteria (morphological and syntactic structures) with 10 bilingual children (six to eight years old) referred for special education evaluation revealed that pragmatic criteria were superior predictors of both achievement and teacher ratings.
