Leadership and Excellence in Schooling.
Sergiovanni, Thomas J.
Educational Leadership, v41 n5 p4,6-13 Feb 1984
A fundamental distinction is drawn between competence and excellence in schooling. Competence refers to meeting predetermined objective standards; excellence is multidimensional, holistic, and readily perceived, though not easily defined. Accordingly, five "forces" of educational leadership are presented as preconditions for educational excellence: technical, human, educational, symbolic, and cultural. (TE)
