Among Black graduate and professional students at predominantly White colleges and universities, personal background characteristics were more powerful predictors of students' racial consciousness and academic achievement than graduate school experiences. Students' perceptions of greater opportunities for establishing mentor relationships were particularly influential in lowering race consciousness and raising achievement levels. (Author/MJL)
