In order to prove that mutual gaze does not develop fortuitously in young children but results from a gaze-action/gaze-reaction process, videotapes of 11 high- and 11 low-friendship dyads at play were analyzed for gaze-related utterances and mutual gaze. Concludes that gaze and mutual gaze are systematic components of preschool children's conversational behavior. (Author/RH)
