Numerous reasons exist for using a classroom-community model with severely/profoundly handicapped youth, including skill generalization, reinforcer sampling, awareness by nonhandicapped people, appropriate role models in the community, elevated teacher expectations, parent expectations, demonstrations of competence by students, and facilitating curriculum selection.
