To determine whether administrative succession affects organizational performance, researchers gathered data on coaching and other administrative personnel changes among 26 National Football League teams during 1970-1978. Statistical analysis indicates that coaching succession has little effect on team winning percentage and may be a form of ritual scapegoating. (RW)
